Dr. Bonnie Kanin has been a member of The Counseling Center team for ten years. She earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology from DePaul University in Chicago and completed an internship in Pediatric Psychology at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, both APA (American Psychological Association)-approved programs. While living in the greater Washington, DC area, Dr. Kanin served as a consultant to the Biological Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Branches at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, working on many research studies investigating psychological disorders. She also consulted to the University of Maryland Medical Center School of Nursing, counseling students in the clinical training program. She has taught college courses in Introductory Psychology, Human Development, Abnormal Psychology, Statistics and Research Design at George Mason University (Virginia), Montgomery College (Maryland), Mt. Washington College and NHTI (New Hampshire). In private practice for over 30 years, Dr. Kanin has served children, adolescents, adults, couples and families in psychotherapy and diagnostic psychological testing. Currently, her practice is limited to individual and couples' counseling with adults. Interests include: physiological, cognitive, emotional and social factors in human development; family of origin issues; relationship dynamics; effective coping. She uses many psychotherapeutic techniques, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
