Dr. Amanda Berns obtained her Bachelors of Science (BS) degree, Education Specialist (EdS)
degree, and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from the University of Iowa. She has obtained
clinical training within school settings from birth to three through post-secondary education; along
with pediatric psychology outpatient settings at the University of Iowa's Autism Clinic, providing
diagnostic and behavioral assessment and consultation services; as well as The Ohio State's
Nisonger Center across several diagnostic clinics for youth ages 3 and older. Dr. Berns also
obtained practica experience completing diagnostic evaluations for preschool and elementary
school aged children suspected with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at St. David's Autism
Treatment Program in the Minneapolis area, as well as comprehensive evaluation and consultation
for youth who were homeless in Iowa City. Additionally, she gained valuable experience and
training as a fellow in the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disorders
(LEND) program at the University of Iowa. Dr. Berns completed her internship at Devereux's
Community Behavioral Health organization in the greater Philadelphia area, completing
neuropsychological evaluations and other assessments for individuals of all ages, along with
therapy and consultation for youth and adults who experience a variety of difficulties across home,
school, and community settings.
In addition to these training experiences, Dr. Berns has obtained work experiences relevant to her
practice. She has coordinated many research projects in several research laboratories in the
Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Iowa, where she gained
significant training and experience in diagnostic assessment measures for ASD. Dr. Berns has
several years of experience providing therapeutic mentorship and instruction to talented and gifted
students, some of whom were twice exceptional with disabilities, in a R1 university setting (offering
the highest level of research) at the Belin-Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent
Development. Over the past two years, Dr. Berns has been licensed as a School Psychologist in
Minnesota and Washington states, practicing as a school psychologist while completing her
dissertation and presenting her research on friendship and loneliness in talented and gifted
adolescents with ASD. Throughout her experiences, Dr. Berns has specialized in identification and
treatment for individuals with ASD across all ages, particularly those who are higher functioning
and/or talented and gifted.
At The Counseling Center, Dr. Berns offers neuropsychological evaluations to provide diagnostic
clarity and inform interventions for individuals of all ages.
